Summary: "C’mon then, Potter. Don’t tell me there’s nothing you’ve ever wanted to do to this body.”

My darling [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat,

It's your birthday!! And gosh, that's a day worth celebrating. Knowing you is such a pleasure. Your art, your fic, your modding skills, your clever commentary on life; if I didn't like you so much I'd be dead jealous. But I do like you so much (really quite a lot - you're a bit of a gem, you know?) and wanted to celebrate the occassion of your birthday with a bit of smut. As one does. Only then I got to reading your likes and prompts lists and this whole other thing took shape that's sort of a mish-mash of some of that, and there is still smut - there is! I promise! - but other things as well, like feelings, and brokenness, and things that are perhaps not what they seem, and a pale Draco who bruises easily and...well. I hope you enjoy this whatever-it-is! And most of all, hope you have a wonderful, creative, brilliant, rewarding, happy year ahead!! ♥♥

Dear, dear [livejournal.com profile] gracerene,
Sharing a fandom with you is such a joy. Your comments, your recs, your fic, your posts on lj and tumblr, the very fabulous postcard from Tasmania that's decorating my refrigerator, your lovely brunch company. I'm so happy I've gotten to know you! So when the lovely [livejournal.com profile] nia_kantorka organized a birthday event to celebrate your awesomeness, I was fully on board. "I'll just hammer out some porn!" I thought. Ha. Best laid plans, right? Erised kicked into high gear, and then RL, and then dracotops, and, well, keeping things short has never really been my forte. A new plan was hatched: half-birthday porn! So today, on the occassion of your half birthday, I offer you birthday porn, with interest. I hope I've managed to hit some of the right spots, and that you enjoy. Most of all, thank you for being such a brilliant, kind, thoughtful, fantastic person. Here's to a wonderful, exciting half-year to come!! ♥♥

Summary: Draco never expected to see Harry doing that again. Especially with someone else, in a grainy photograph that's landed on his desk one Monday morning.

This was my fic for the always fabulous [livejournal.com profile] dracotops_harry fest! Huge thanks are due to [livejournal.com profile] disapparater for telling me every time that Draco got to be too much of a jerk and for pushing me to go deeper in thinking through Harry and Draco's motivations. In addition to brit-picking and beta-ing, this story owes quite a bit of its emotional coherence to her thougtful questions and interventions. Also to [livejournal.com profile] sophie_french for reading through an early draft and being incredibly encouraging and thoughtful, and for many discussions about how to proceed, and to [livejournal.com profile] vaysh for being a phenomenally supportive, patient, kind, all-around incredible mod. And, of course, to [livejournal.com profile] firethesound for a prompt that was a great deal of fun, and for indulging my overthinking on the subject of knees.

Also, and very importantly, a huge, huge, huge thanks to everyone who's read and commented. Once I hit a stride I really enjoyed writing this, but the process of figuring out how these various pieces would fit together was...a struggle. I was quite convinced that this just didn't work, and that the emotional resonance I was hoping it would have was just not going to hold together (which I say as someone who is not generally given over to false or exaggerated humility. I just really thought it, you know, had some good moments but pretty much sucked on the whole). I've been overwhelmed and moved by the very kind, thoughtful, thoroughly amazing comments that people have left and the reactions people have shared, and if you left one of those comments please know how grateful I am. It's been one of those experiences that makes me feel so incredibly lucky to be part of fandom, and this fandom community in particular. Huge ♥s to all of you!

Title: Subtle Science and Exact Art
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion
Pairing/Characters: Portrait!Snape/Lucius Malfoy, brief mention of Harry/Draco, Lucius/Narcissa
Rating: NC-17
Word count: 6k
Warnings/Content Notes: dirty talk, anal play, object insertion, wanking, D/S dynamics, infidelity (of the consensual, mutual, explicitly encouraged variety)
Author's Notes: This is a spin-off of Potter’s Parselprostate (and the Chamber of Secrets). Some context given there may make relationships, settings, and motivations a bit clearer clearer, particularly themention of Draco and Harry's relationship and the allusion to Lucius' seeming infidelity, which he is pursuing with Narcissa's explicit encouragement and as part of an ongoing mutual arrangement; as Potter's Parselprostate ends, she sends him off for a mood-improving dalliance with Snape while she pursues Professor Sinistra. However, this can be read as a stand-alone one-shot.
Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] disapparater for fab beta work on more than one draft/occassion! ♥
As part of the [livejournal.com profile] hp_concrit_fest, this story benefited from the thoughtful comments, critiques, and encouragements of many of my fellow participants, to whom I am very grateful. I think it can be important to explore process and see how stories change through various drafts; towards that end, you can find the earlier draft of the story and the comments it received here. Concrit is a labor of love and is welcome and appreciated here, especially in the spirit of concrit's "at least one positive point along with the criticism" guideline (please do not comment on the concrit entry, as per the mods’ request). Of course, purely positive comments are welcome as well!
Summary: Death has come with many delights. No more afternoons spent dodging explosions. No more evenings marking the barely legible drivel that passes for coursework. No more bowing before madmen intent on destroying each other. If not for the display about to unfold before me, that might have been death’s greatest pleasure. But then, there is Lucius Malfoy’s arse.

Warnings/Enticements: kissing, light bondage, blowjobs, facials, dirty talk, intergluteal sex, wanking, first time, maybe dub con, in that Harry is reluctant at first and tied up throughout but Draco insists on enthusiastic, affirmative verbal consent and works quite assiduously to get it out of him.

This was my fic for [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised, and it was the most invigorating, fun writing experience I've had in a long time. That plus the quality of every other erised fic made this fest such a delight! I've been thrilled beyond measure that other people seem to have enjoyed reading it half as much as I enjoyed writing it. My unending thanks to everyone who commented, messaged, recced and discussed. You've all really made my holiday season, and on into January, and I can't thank you enough.

Particular thanks go to [livejournal.com profile] disapparater for being a patient, patient beta who handled every panicked 2am inquiry with thoughtfulness and aplomb. Also to [livejournal.com profile] firethesound and [livejournal.com profile] sophie_french for excitement, encouragement, and suggestions at all the right moments, and for thinking this madness was a good iea worth doing, and to everyone in the [livejournal.com profile] hd_writers comm, especially the chatzy room, for encouragement and Strict Discipling. To the [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised mods for being patient and kind and for running such a phenomenal fest. And, of course, always, to [livejournal.com profile] birdsofshore, for a "content I would love" list that sent my imagination running wild, for comments that left me with the biggest, goofiest grins - for generally being the best giftee a person could ask for. (Which really just means we should all make her more things, doesn't it?)

SO MUCH GOOD FIC. So much good fic that reccing is hard because narrowing it down is so difficult. Just go over to [livejournal.com profile] hd_erised and read everything. Everything.

Some things to start with:

Another Mask Behind You by [livejournal.com profile] lettered - NC-17, 120k - Draco is a high-end prostitute who hides his identity. Harry unknowingly hires him. And then there is porn, questions about identity, domestic bliss, more porn, and truth as seen through a web of lies. (And then more porn. Seriously, if you don’t want sex scene after sex scene you probably shouldn’t read this. And please read the warnings.)
If anything, I think this summary sells the story short because while the sex is hot - and hot damn the sex is scorchingly, meltingly hot - there is so much more to this fic than the sex. The hidden identity component becomes a fascinating device for exploring the evolution of these two men's beliefs about themselves and each other. Draco, especially, is explored in such beautiful, complicated ways as he sees who he could be without the baggage attached to being a Malfoy post-war. The whole story is moving and engaging and the end had me quite literally gasping out loud. It was so easy to get invested and so worth it, and even at 120k (which really flew by) I would've been happy to read more.

House Style for Gryffindors by [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic and [livejournal.com profile] noeon - NC-17, 11.5k - The Slytherins have always ruled the Sortilegus, a wizarding society magazine popular since the Middle Ages which lost most of its staff during the recent Unpleasantness (informally known as the Campaign against Noses). Pansy Parkinson has just been made the youngest witch ever to head the publication and has been charged with livening up the magazine and helping it move into post-war society whilst maintaining tradition. Which is all fine by Draco until she brings Harry Potter on staff, an obvious attempt to force Draco into a nervous breakdown by requiring him to work cheek-by-jowl with his arch nemesis.
This fic is so brilliant snarky. Draco is delightful - snappy and clever and just a bit hilariously oblivious, and his interactions with Harry are fantastic. There's an excellent cast of secondary characters - Blaise and Pansy are everything wonderful you could imagine about Slytherins running a fashion mag - and the hilarity that ensues at the big main event at Hogwarts is, well, hilarious. To say the least. One of those fics that is seamless and lovely and feels like such good, indulgent fun. Like a good cocktail in fic form.

On the Turning Away by [livejournal.com profile] blamebrampton - PG, 25.5k - It's one thing to be good at not making a besotted fool of yourself over a man when he's busy being the most famous wizard in the world and you're tucked away quietly in Wiltshire. It's quite another when you have to see him every morning.
This story was positively lovely. It was full of fabulous lines and descriptions that were funny and warm and clever. Every line of dialogue hits the nail on the head; I could read these conversations forever. Harry and Draco are both more adult, in a really charming way - they have a different sort of appreciation for each other and come to slowly enjoy each others' company on new terms, but without forgetting the past. There's also a fabulous OC, a fabulous Luna, and a moment with Lucius that is positively priceless. The whole experience of reading was a pleasure.

A Private Reason for This by [livejournal.com profile] femmequixotic - NC-17, 92k - When the wife of a star politician in the Scottish Ministry turns up dead just outside Hogsmeade, Draco Malfoy and his murder investigation team are called in from the Edinburgh Auror force to find her killer. What DCI Malfoy doesn't expect, however, is to have an ex from two decades past end up in his murder room, cocking up not only his case, but also his heart.
I don't even know where to begin. As evidenced by the at least half a dozen lengthy comments I've left? (*cringes* Sorry, MA!) Anyway. Whew. Deep breaths. This was my gift, so perhaps I'm biased, but jfc, it's perfection. It's so beautifully written that it felt less like reading a story and more like taking a trip into another world. Every setting and every character felt so perfectly, amazingly real. The way they speak to each other and know each other, the complexity of everyone who is in this story, is mindblowing. And I haven't even talked about the plot yet, right? Well. It's a murder mystery, and it's a really good one. There are interesting, viable suspects and the pursuit of the killer is excellent. Draco's team - Pansy, Susan Bones, Lee Jordan and, in this case, Harry Potter - are all motivated to solve the case by different and equally compelling reasons that tell us so much about them, and seeing how they work together is a pleasure. (The whole cast of secondary characters is a thing of beauty.) And the relationship between Harry and Draco...holy shit. They're brought together by the case, but it goes so much further. Their relationship becomes - already is, in some key ways - really close, and they challenge each other and know each other. And the sex is fucking steamy as hell, and there are also not-quite-sex scenes that blew my mind for the sheer intimacy between these two. There's no amount of flailing I can do that will really convey how much I love this story. I will say, though, that this is one of those stories that I wanted to read all in one go but also had to ration out so it wouldn't end, and then when I got to the end just started reading it again. Which I highly recommend doing, and then we can be speechless together.

Tea and No Sympathy by [livejournal.com profile] who_la_hoop - NC-17, 70k - It's Potter's fault, of course, that Draco finds himself trapped in the same twenty-four-hour period, repeating itself over and over again. It's been nearly a year since the unpleasant business at Hogwarts, and Draco's getting on with his life quite nicely, thank you, until Harry sodding Potter steps in and ruins it all, just like always. At first, though, the time loop seems liberating. For the first time in his life, he can do anything, say anything, be anything, without consequence. But the more Draco repeats the day, the more he realises the uncomfortable truth: he's falling head over heels for the speccy git. And suddenly, the time loop feels like a trap. For how can he ever get Harry to love him back when time is, quite literally, against him?
I was not necessarily expecting to get totally sold on the time loop premise. I got totally sold on the time loop premise. It's brilliantly done. Draco's reactions to repeating the day are so telling. He evolves slowly and beautifully over time as he rethinks/re-imagines his options and gets to know Harry. This characterization of Draco in general felt really wonderful and spot-on. There's snark and cleverness, but also that desperation and frustration that we see in the books, and his evolution in this story is one I can absolutely see as an extension of canon. And the depiction of Harry is brilliant as well, as is the whole world of the story. Thoughtful and skillful and wonderful.

Un Noël Très Parisien by [livejournal.com profile] noeon - NC-17, 14.5k - When Draco crossed paths with Auror Potter at a political function in Paris, he was not expecting their former animosity to change into something rather more intriguing. But he could be certain their casual flirtation would not last more than the night, couldn't he?
Somehow, someway, this fic came out feeling like the best parts of the holiday season. It's got a wonderful, festive, glamorous feeling in parts, and really moving warmth and nostalgia in others, and loads of humor and wit all the way through. Harry is fabulously (hotly) confident, Draco is both wonderfully skillful and doing Slytherin proud in moments of sneakiness. Hermione and Pansy, as their besties, are a delight as well. And while it's going along being funny and charming, the feels are building and building, towards a conclusion that is hot, then gut-wrenching, then sweet.

There are exciting things afoot over at [livejournal.com profile] hp_concrit_fest! Part of what's been so valuable is having the chance to sit down and really think about how different authors balance different aspects of storytelling. It's got me thinking about stories that take narrative risks. It doesn't always work, but when it does the results can be phenomenal. A few of those fics, below.

Fear and Loathing at the Phoenix by [livejournal.com profile] curiouslyfic - NC-17, 20k, H/D - Harry's Hunter S. Thompson. Draco's his attorney. It's the Tenth annual Victory Day and there's Journalism afoot.
So, I don't especially like Hunter S. Thompson. Not my cuppa. I was not expecting to like this fic. Holy fuck, I love this fic. Ten years after the war Harry's a journalist (nom de plume: Regulus Black), Luna's his editor, and Draco's his (very necessary) attorney (aka: Malfuck). He won't go to the Ministry's official events in commemoration of the 10 year anniversary of the Battle of Hogwarts; Instead he goes to, essentially, a Wizarding Harry Potter Con. People are cosplaying a million different Harrys and Dracos (aka: Malfakes) and everyone elses, and Draco and Harry are wandering around taking it all in. It could've been entirely cracky. Instead, somehow, it turns into a meditation on who these people are, what the war did to them, why they're together, how their shared experiences during the war, their history together, makes them indispensable to one another. It also gives an extraordinary sense for how surreal it would be to actually be Harry Potter or Draco Malfoy, what it would be like to try to parse the world after becoming that famous. And the writing, damn. It's gut-wrenching, gorgeous, emotional, sad, funny, hot. Everything. Exquisite.

On the Couch by [livejournal.com profile] frayach - NC-17, 26k, H/D - It’s a Mind Healer’s worse nightmare to lose a patient to suicide, but Mind Healer Nick Nichols can attest to the fact that a murder/suicide is even worse. If only Dr. Freud had come up with a sure cure for love.
This story is told through the eyes of Draco's therapist. It's quite a trip to go on this journey with him, to learn Draco as he does, to figure out what's going on between Harry and Draco as he does. It's sort of the opposite of Fear and Loathing at the Phoenix - instead of being inside the space of the story with Harry and Draco, you're placed outside of their relationship. Instead of feeling distanced from the emotional core of their relationship, this choice and the way it was executed had me hooked. I had to know more, to keep reading, to find out what would become of them. Their attraction is so strong, so irresistible, that it pulls everything along with it, and starting from this vantage point, with this distance, only made that more apparent. Very compelling, very intense, and brilliantly executed.

Salvation and Sacrament by [livejournal.com profile] abbycadabra - PG-13, 16.5k - "It seems as if everywhere I go, I find the nowhere in somewhere, or make it of anywhere."
This is another "story in the style of," this time Dave Eggers. Who I like more than HST, but mostly inasmuch as I'm pretty solidly "meh" about Dave Eggers. This one also takes on a bit of a different temporal structure - it starts by telling you the ending, and then gets you there. Because of the eventual destination (as revealed in the first line) that seemed like it was going to be rather a big challenge. And yet, it got me there. And it got me there in such a brilliantly unexpected way. This story explores Harry's hero complex and his guilt - where it comes from and where, without a war to fight, it would go - and does it starkly and unflinchingly. And while Harry is the focus, the same is true of Draco. Just as we get the darker side of Harry's "saving people thing," we see the strength the war brought Draco. It's an unusual portrait of the characters and I can't think of another fic that left me feeling this way about the two of them, or that made me feel so okay about this particular end point.

I think all of these stories are quite extraordinary, though mileage may be especially variable around narrative/structural things. They're also all fics I love talking about, so if you're so inclined (or have recs for similar) please come chat!
dicta_contrion: (Default)
I'm so woefully behind on Career Fair and quite sad about it. Everyone's raving about this collection of fics and, indeed, every time I've gotten to sit down and get into one it's been so, so worth it. I'd wanted to wait until I was caught up to get reccing on these but, you know, there's always room for more Career-Fair-related rec posts, and at this rate there probably will be. For now, a few of the Career Fair entries I've been flailing over lately:

Just Pick the Right One (or Harry Potter Needs to Get a Job) - NC-17, 10k - From the moment he left the Aurors, Harry had been making an increased nuisance of himself with his new found free time. So his friends, instead of killing him and feeding him to the Manticores (plan A), decide to ask the help of a professional.
This is so, so funny. Harry's friends are perfection. The jobs Draco comes up with for Harry are pure gold. The way they handle each other is fantastic. And the way this story is funny - it's just so clever. It's smart humour and silly humour and the way it's constructed - the plot, the clarity of the writing - just lets that humour shine through. It was a really, really fun read, the kind of fic that just made me go "wow, I'm in a better mood. Thank heavens for this fic."

REVOLVEVLOVER - NC-17, 46k - The work Harry does is justifiable. It’s justice. He works for his country, and his country is a republic—the magical side, anyway. It’s not laudable work, it’s not work he’s proud of, but it’s necessary work. Harry has always taken the necessary jobs that no one else has the stomach for. It's just that he's never deciphered a kill sheet and seen Draco Malfoy's name on it.
This summary led to a real, honest to goodness bug-eyed double take. Draco, Harry, political intrigue, ethical quandraies, repressed or previously undiscovered but potentially irresistible feelings? I am so there for everything about this. But then, getting that excited about something before you read it comes with a potential for being let down. Did that happen? Fuck no. I was sneaking off to read this all day. So gripping, so awesome, so damn cool. There were a million little details that made this pop; the number of feelings I have about Harry's hair and Draco's glasses could be their own post. And, while being super cool, it's all always working towards plot or characterization. Speaking of which, the damn plot...damn. Everything that happens in the last third of this story had me completely on the edge of my seat. Gripping and memorable and awesome.

The Sleeping Prince - NC-17, 25k + art - Harry is miserable and tired of being an Auror, coasting through life until he’s forced to make some changes. Spurred on by his passion for drawing and working with best-selling author Draco Malfoy, Harry develops a charm which gives children a magical, interactive reading experience. But when it’s time to test the spell, the two men find themselves trapped in a nightmarish fairy tale world. Can they escape unscathed, or is Draco right in his assertions that there is no such thing as a happily ever after?
This is one of those stories that sucked me in completely. I could feel the world Harry and Draco were exploring. It was intricate and beautiful and scary and breathtaking. The art and story complement each other perfectly to create an incredible atmosphere that left me on the edge of my seat and had my heart aching for these two. And I am absolutely not going to spoil the ending, but damn, that ending - whew. Superb and one to remember.

Where the Shadows Fall - PG-13/R, 19k - Four years ago Draco left England without a second thought. Now Harry Potter has shown up on his doorstep looking for a yeti.
This fic is so beautiful. The setting is lush and vivid and the images stuck with me to create an atmosphere for the story that feels really special. And I love, love and adore, the way things unfold between Harry and Draco. This Draco feels so substantial - he's grown and changed, but he's still him and Harry is wonderful - he's charming and open-hearted and stubborn and a teensy bit dense but still smart and brave. And the Luna here is fantastic! Really, this story has a bit of everything - it's funny and subtle and emotional and sexy. And the Yeti hunt? Perfect in all sorts of unexpected ways. This is the perfect story for curling up with a cup of tea, and, in fact, that's a little bit of how it feels. Gentle and nourishing and lovely.

It may be October 29th, but it’s not over till it’s Rect-over, right?

One of the things I struggle with most is keeping things short, thus doing a couple of fests recently that had strict word limits. It's had me thinking about what makes a good shorter piece of fiction and why the short fics I love work. The process brought me back to a lot of short fic I really love. This rec list is inspired by that – a few favorite short pieces that, in under 4k (sometimes much less) manage to tell a complete story/build a complete word/create big emotional impact.

The Way (We Break) by nishizono - R, 647 words, Harry/Draco - Harry doesn't hate Astoria. He doesn't hate the way she cries when Draco recites his wedding vows, or the way Draco toys with her curls during the reception. He doesn't hate her, but god, he hates Draco.
The structure of this story is so simple, the writing is so clear, and the ending is so "oh, fuck." The author establishes everything you need to know with a few lines that make the relationship between Harry and Draco just exactly clear enough. And have I mentioned the ending? Not just because it was such a moment, but because it filled in so many blanks effectively and capped the piece beautifully, in no small part because it kept me thinking about what comes next.

Cicadas by [livejournal.com profile] rhoddlet - R, 900 words, Harry/Draco
This story does an incredible job of setting a scene. The language is so visceral. I could feel the heat, the intensity of these moments. Reading this felt like the grueling, stillest parts of summer spent waiting for the heat to break. By the time the pivotal moment arrives I was already invested enough to be shocked and moved. I remain amazed that anyone could fit all of this into, essentially, a couple of pages.

I Am Your Shadow by [livejournal.com profile] eidheann_writes - NC-17, 3,128 words, Harry/Draco - Love (n) An intense feeling of deep affection. Yield (v) To give up or surrender (oneself).
Okay, technically I've already recced this here, but there's no way I could leave it off a list of short fics because the words:feels ratio here is out of control. This story is devastating in the best of ways, and eidheann has such a perfect sense for what to say and what to leave open to interpretation. So perfect that, months later, I still think back to this ending and just wonder.

As the Hand, the Glove by dulcemia - NC-17, 3357, Harry/Draco - "I say it again: the spirit loves/ the flesh, as the hand the glove."
Unf. If you'd like to die by smut, clicking above is not a bad way to go. Draco is so deliciously Slytherin and the tension, the wanting, is just palpable. Sentences are structured and words chosen to heighten all of that and it works beautifully, not just to make for a good read or a hot story (which would be more than enough) but to create an atmosphere that's crisp and clear and a perfect complement to the featured kink.

Kailash, When it Rises by mirabella - R, 3626 words, Harry/Draco - Harry can't sleep.
I swear this fic is bigger on the inside. The way time moves in this story is so precise and lingering that it feels like hours have passed even though it can be read instead of twenty minutes. In creating this super-slow sense of time, the story replicates the experience that Harry is having - of waiting for something while times dawdles and sticks. There are so many little choices along the way - rituals, habits, invocation of sounds - that compound that sense, and the end result is masterful.

Still working out what exactly makes short fics really work, but there are some good clues here - all this intentional language, tight storytelling and, perhaps most noticeably/surprisingly for me, a willingness to trust the reader. Lots to think about, and I'm still thinking. Short fic recs and/or insights are more than welcome!

For my first rectober post, going for fics from a variety of fests. There have been so many good ones going on!

Title:A Fejedelem
Author/Artist: Anonymous (part of [livejournal.com profile] hp_silencio)
Pairing(s) Albus Dumbledore/Gellert Grindelwad
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 1069
Summary: There is the line between them, the one Albus cannot cross and the one Gellert does not see.
Why I loved it: This is a pairing I find really fascinating but haven't read a lot about. This fic does a fantastic job of juxtaposing the beginning and end of their relationship and exposing Dumbledore's feelings about it. It's really visual and unfolds beautifully, and the sense of magic is so strong throughout, both as described and in the writing itself.

Title:Play/Pause (a Time to Remember)
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] this_bloody_cat (part of [livejournal.com profile] hp_drizzle)
Pairing(s) Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 3,500
Summary: In hindsight, Draco should have known change was often unstoppable when it came heralded by one Harry Potter.
Why I loved it I read this on a rainy morning when I was kind of cranky and it was just pure fun. Loads of snarky banter and great details and I loved the fliratious antagonism between them. Also feature a fantastic, amusing Pansy and Draco in wet clothes, and really, how are you going to go wrong with any of that?

Title:Parapraxis
Author/Artist: [livejournal.com profile] pasdexcuses (part of [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest)
Pairing(s) Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: R
Word Count: 18,700
Summary: Malfoy would never admit it, yet losing the Remembrall was a blessing in disguise. Or maybe a curse. But that was not the point here. The point was, the Snitch didn’t get involved until third year. Before, there was the Remembrall.
Why I loved it This is such a cool story. Draco and Harry go back and forth, daring each other to do various outlandish things, and the basic premise is a lot of fun. But it's more than that - in the process of pushing each other to fulfill dares, they push each other to confront things without ever giving up their messy, complicated, prickly natures/relationship. It's one of those stories that explains why these two makes sense together, why they're exactly and perfectly right for each other. And it's a beautifully paced, evocative pleasure to read along the way.

Title:Every Step of the Way
Author/Artist: Anonymous (part of [livejournal.com profile] hd_fan_fair)
Pairing(s) Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: ~200 + Art
Summary: Draco is arrested for prostitution, but instead of being sent to Azkaban he’s put in a new rehabilitative Ministry program that requires him to go to therapy instead of jail. Harry, his therapist, is going to have his work cut out.
Why I loved it This is for my prompt, so perhaps I'm a little biased but jfc, this...everything about this. It's incredible. Every panel is so meticulously constructed. The images are gorgeous and rich and suggestive of so much emotional depth and change. The accompanying text is perfection. The tension builds beautifully and the ending is fantastic, and the amount of time you could spend just staring at this totally hotness is not to be underestimated. Totally fantastic.

Title: No Greater Victory
Author: dicta_contrion
Rating: NC-17
Warning(s): (highlight for spoilery details): *recreational drug use (not H, D or H/D), sexual blackmail (Blaise/Neville, with the aid of alcohol and at Draco's behest), sex used for revenge, brief cruelty to Muggles. Basically, Draco starts out being angry and bitter and, sometimes with Pansy's encouragement, does some genuinely shitty stuff as a result.*
Word Count: 27k
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Summary: Back at Hogwarts after the war, a defeated Draco Malfoy is prepared to settle for life's simpler pleasures: snark, sex, and Slytherin scheming. That is until Pansy, newly in possession of Malfoy Manor, offers to return his ancestral home. Just one condition: he has to win, and break, Harry Potter's heart to get it. That's no problem. Draco's got this situation completely under control. Completely. At least until he doesn't.

No Greater Victory

This fic was full of firsts: the diary format, writing from Draco's perspective, writing a closer-to-the-war/still-unredeemed Draco, Harry's first sexy-times and remixing something, which was the theme of this year's Smoochfest. I remixed the movie Cruel Intentions, which is one of the trashy/darkly humorous teen movies that had a heyday in the late 90s, and which is itself a remix of Les Liaisons dangereuses. If you've seen the movie, let me assure you that this ending is significantly different from the film's. If you haven't seen it, let me assure you that (a) you don't need to have; the basic plot has been reinterpreted many times already and prior knowledge is not required or particularly helpful except, (b) it may be useful to know that the Draco character in the movie is a handsome, charismatic arsehole and this Draco starts out the same way. However, this story is absolutely compliant with Smoochfest's "happy ending" requirement.

Special thanks to my prompter, to the awesome [livejournal.com profile] hd_smoochfest mods, and to [livejournal.com profile] disapparater for being an awesome, thorough, supportive beta. (I do tinker, so any remaining mistakes are entirely my own.)

Very excited to say that I'm signed up for the new HP Concrit Fest!

As the name suggests, the fest is designed for giving and getting feedback on the strengths and weakness of your writing. What the name alone doesn't tell you is how thoughtfully the fest has been designed. Entries will be closed to community members, so no one outside of the community will see your comments unless you choose to make them public at the end of the fest. Written submissions will be between 2k and 7k to keep the commenting commitment manageable (and to avert the temptation to turn everything into a 30k mini-epic *cough*me*cough*) and the deadline is almost a whole three months away. Participants agree to comment on half the entries and will give at least one point of positive and one point of constructive criticism and flaming is strictly forbidden, so feedback should really give a sense for both what could be improved and what's already strong. And, with more and more people joining in - they're up to 19 participants already - it looks like it will be a really well-rounded group.

The kicker for me was that I haven't seen and can't remember hearing about something like this before. That could be a product of relative newness, but whether or not that's the case it seems like a not-to-be-missed opportunity to work at getting better with a community of people who want to do the same and who share the underlying love of fandom and fanworks.

So! Check it out! And consider joining in. My (possibly ridiculously kinkysmuttywrong) entry is already underway and I very much want to share the excitement!

Title: Potter’s Parselprostate (and the Chamber of Secrets)
Author: [livejournal.com profile] dicta_contrion
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 17.5k
Warning(s): (highlight for details): *mild dubcon – Harry is pressured to have sex to help Hogwarts/Hermione.*
Disclaimer: Harry Potter characters are the property of J.K. Rowling and Bloomsbury/Scholastic. No profit is being made, and no copyright infringement is intended.
Summary: Hogwarts’ future depends on Malfoy’s texts. Too bad the key is up Potter’s arse.

This fic was so much fun to write. I grabbed the prompt in the middle of hurtfest, in search of a break from the unrelenting angst, and it took on a life of it’s own. A crazy, silly life of it’s own. 17k of parselsmut later, I’d giggled, groaned, stressed about the porn, come up with new kinks for Lucius, and gotten pretty far out of the angst zone. All of you who have left comments and kudos and recs, I can’t thank you enough (really, I really can never thank you enough ♥) and I’m so happy to have gotten to share this particular slice of nutty fun.

Special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] zeitgeistic whose prompt left me plenty of room to run wild and whose special request made me cackle with glee, to the mods for being so encouraging when I was all “so…..17k of parselsmut…”and to [livejournal.com profile] disapparater, my beta and brit-picker, whose patience, insight, support, knowledge of canon, and dedication to the term “parselprostate” are all extraordinary.
